Hi, this is Erika Kurahashi! "Max Lovely!" Volume 1 has released. (happy)
There is a special newsly-written story at the end of this volume called,
"Characters File Special"!! I usually introduce the characters in this ¼ corner,
but there are not enough pages to do it when it is released as tankoubon.
So (small voice)… Even though I feel terrible, I don't have enough time that I decided
to have this ¼ corner only on this page in this volume. I'm sorry to everyone who always ]
looks forward to reading this section. See you again at the end of the volume!

"Max Lovely!" End of the Volume Scrapbook File!!
Max Lovely Behind the Making Of Story:
Kurahashi has tried different genre such as celebrity, bands, and ghosts in the past,
but she had a policy of always using school as the background of her manga. It means it
would always involve school life and the reason is I always enjoy writing manga about school.
Because of this, I am very happy that I am doing a series generally taking place in school
this time! I don't have the confidence that I am writing a realistic school life of present
time, though.
It was while writing "Seikimatsu no Angel" I came up with the characters for "Max".
It may have been around the end of Vol.3. Since I had already decided on Airi's and
Taki's names, faces, personalities and most of the images, I really had looked forward in
writing about them!! Anyhow, my main characters in old works always end up being similar. ((
They're slightly different from each other, though.) Anyway, I was working on a character
with intention of making her opposite in every way and someone like Airi was created. (laughs)
Although I didn't want her to be an individual that cries, that was impossible after all.
(She's been crying since the first chapter {laughs}.) Maybe it's because the creator gets
emotional easily?? ( Cries even with the movie, a book, something to think about or in the
sleep (from the dream)…

Private school with junior high school and high school sections. Established for 20 years. Escalator system from junior high school to high school.
School regulations are pretty loose. Jewelries and accessories are basically forbidden, but won't get upset much when they wear them (laughs). There is no restriction in the relationship between upper classman and lower classman so even the First Year student can dress showy. (The junior high school section of my high school was like that.)
Free to wear any winter coat.
There are 6 classes in each grade. Total 18 classes (Total students in school, approx. 700). Gym class is separated by gender so 2 classes combine together.
About "F":
What is "F"? I think the readers just know they are bunch of bad people even though they have no clue what they are, but Airi and her friends don't know anything at all. They don't realize Hatori (Kumika) and Iseya are on "F"'s side, either. Secret of "F" will eventually be revealed in the future.
Right now, those being picked on seem to be the bad people, but that is not true at all. Please read until the end.

Hairstyle depends how she feels that day.
She doesn't get upset often, but she would go nuts when she is enraged. She is crazy when she flips out…
She believes anything is fine as long as they look good on her, so she doesn't care about popular style. However, she does wear popular fashion, too.
Airi: Wearing boys' clothes is fun. Go for the boy spirit!! I'm as good looking as Taki!

Weight: 46kg on average, but there are some fluctuation ( Creator is envious because she doesn't have the height.

After-school activ.: Cheerleading (more details to follow on after-school activities in Vol.2!)
She may have multiple personalities in her. There may be unsophisticated part about her, too (laughs). ( Besides her cheerful, cool, lovely, weak, and strong sides, she has many traits so there are times creator cannot keep up with her. Airi is the one that keeps behaving in her way more than anyone else, so I sympathize Taki (laughs). "Keep up with looking after Airi for me, Taki (from the creator)."
Airi-chan's Top Secret:
Her first kiss was in First Grade!! Of course, the person she did with wasn't Taki or Hikaru. Even the creator has no clue if he'll ever make an appearance in the future!!

Blood type: A
Height: 174cm when he was 2nd Yr in jr. high (still growing)
Grade: First in the grade. Good in sports as is. Won't cook (He can if he puts his mind into it!?)
After-school activ.: Boys Volleyball
Family members: Father is a company employee, mother is a hairstylist, has a brother who is 4 years senior of Taki
He has egotistic personality so he would never be with the crowd of boys. He can socialize with anyone, but he doesn't have a best friend at the moment. (Rather yet, he seems to get along with Airi the most.)
Even when Airi gets involved in trouble with other girlfriends, he won't interject in something that doesn't concern him (laughs). That's because Airi may tell him not to bother (laughs). He doesn't have much interest in girls, either.
Airi: This guy really gets on my nerves. He says awful things without thinking. It was this guy who said the hamburger steak I made was like a bristle. ( At the cooking practice
Taki: Because that's how it looked to me. Don't let that slip to the readers. My popularity will go down.
He may have the least sense of justice of all the heroic characters I've drawn in the past. ( Like he would say, "I'll protect everyone!" He's pretty unkind, too. But, such rough side of him is fresh and I'm pretty fond of it.

Nako is the easiest to draw.
Hobbies are cooking and reading books. Doesn't like to get into trouble with people because she is shy.
Birthdate: 12/9
Blood type: A
Height: 152cm
Weight: 42kg
She was going to school with elementary to 2-year college sections for well-bred girls where she can automatically advance to each section without entrance exam. However, she could not get along with her classmates in junior high school and refused to attend.
But, she became stronger in this volume. Good for her. Although I also have a younger sister (3 years younger than me), I think she is close to Taki as a character in Max (laughs). She is a cool girl who won't depend much on her older sister. ( More like I depending on her all the time. Sorry, Sis… We are very close to each other (at least I think we are). Since her personality is much different from mine, we may get along better. I am amazed that she is a very reliable sister.
{Hikaru Kazami's DATA}
Hikaru: I have no interest in celebrity idols!! Airi is my idol forever! I can see her everyday and take her latest photo as much as I like so I'm too lucky!! ( Hikaru who can just be content with this is… (teardrops)

* He founded "Airi Fan Club" at his discretion and as he made everyone aware of it he gained members.
His grades and athletic ability are okay, but he's awesome in karaoke (& mimicking people).
Part of the "Airi Collection" he gathered in 2 years:
500 recent photos (20 of them are displayed on the wall of his bedroom!)
Erasers, mechanical pencils, manga and magazines she no longer wanted, and New Year's card Airi gave to him
What keeps me in spirit is "Airi-chan's smile"!

I will give introduction on Kumika Hatori, Gorou Iseya, Fujiko and G in the next volume. There is a plan to have Kumika and Gorou make their reappearance.
Regarding the character populairity, Airi is at absolutely at top. Even though Taki and Hikaru cannot compete with her, they are pretty popular, too. Recently, Iseya-kun's popularity is quickly rising!
I think Iseya is the most dramatic character to draw. (He would become so in Ribon Magazine…) He may not seem so in Vol.1, though.
And about romance!! What about Taki, and Airi, Nako and Iseya? It would become a situation involving complicated element such as triangle relationship, but it would make me happy to see you enjoy it. (Though romance is the main theme in my manga.)
Tip of my pen is going bad so I'm changing the pen.
How a girl like Airi who doesn't take notice in boys would show her affection is kind of mysterious even to the creator. Although many may seem to fall in love in the same manner, I think there are various ways. The feeling of love may be the same, but there really are different means of professing love, places for dating, and cause of argument for each person. There is an instance where one may change because of the other person's personality, too (laughs).
My first love was when I was in 4th Grade (when I noticed boys), but the anxious feeling from unrequited love doesn't change at all even when you become an adult and seriously fall in love. There is no end in talking about love story so I'm going to quit around here. Good luck to all the readers! I'd like to write different love situation in "Max". How many couples would really appear by the end of the series!?
